‘Girls’ gone wild

Pleasantly surprised by Sunday night’s premiere of GIRLS. After weeks (months?) of ad inundation via buses, blogs, and AM New York, HBO’s newest female-centric comedy was funnier and a lot less pretentious than I’d imagined. But (there’s always a but), can I really/truly get into a show whose privileged protagonist’s biggest woe (thus far) is the horrifying notion of getting cut off by her parents? Maybe, because hopefully that will change over the course of this inaugural season.  If star (and writer-director) Lena Dunham can intelligently encapsulate postgrad twentysomething city living, or at least a slice of it, in a way that hasn’t been done before, she’ll get my vote. For now I’m giving GIRLS a chance (if anything thanks to the triple threat Luna bar/SmartWater/VitaminWater joke).

It’s not Sex and the City. They swear!
